Mari World II: The Mystery of Lugi
So, I decided to fiddle with Super Mario World ROM hacking for no apparent reason after a decade and a half.
Except I wasn't really trying to make a good Super Mario World ROM hack. It sucks, and it was always meant to suck, because IT'S A JOKE HACK
I wanted it to look like one of those weird, unofficial videogame knockoffs, where someone took an existing game, changed a bunch of things that absolutely shouldn't have been changed, and then sold it for some reason. I was inspired by this Sonic the Hedgehog hack that imitates bootleg games like Super Donkey Kong '99. I forgot its name and I don't think I will find it anytime soon. There will be extensive ASM use for this joke hack!
The sprites have been redrawn to look like cheap imitations of the originals. They aren't entirely different sprites, though, they still unmistakably resemble those from Super Mario World, only as if they were drawn by memory.
The music is completely new, too. Essentially, they are covers of the original songs, but they sound as if someone had the source material, a keyboard, and roughly heard the originals thru a phone call.
For some reason, Forest of Illusion music also plays on stages.

Since I know ASM and the source code of Super Mario World is better understood than water, I decided to fuck the game mechanics a little bit. For example, I made the physics somewhat clunky. I based it on another game, МАРИО 3 ВОКРУГ СВЕТА for the Mega Drive. which means Mario now behaves in a way Nintendo would never have accepted.
The screen doesn't scroll to the left anymore, because why would it? It's a bootleg. ALSO, also... NO OVERWORLD. Why would you need an overworld map?
Mario is also permanently big. Because let's just say the programmer does not understand how to handle states very well. So there you go, big Mario forever.
He shoots projectiles, because apparently being Mario wasn't enough. He's not even fire Mario either, he just does that. He shoots pellets with his hands. Oh, and for shits and giggles, I made the hitbox incredibly picky. It has to hit an enemy dead center. If it hits slightly to the side, it will just pass straight through them. Kinda like a certain game...
When Mario dies, he blows up. The music doesn't even stop for a second. That just happens.
Let's assume that this bootleg developer is also not familiar with Mario. He can't stomp enemies anymore, which makes the whole situation considerably more dangerous. He dies if he stomps anything.
Most of the common enemies have also been replaced with Koopas that just jump up and down.
Every power up is a mushroom visually, because apparently having different power up graphics was too much effort.
I also removed that "mosaic effect" that normally happens when the screen fades in and out. The sound effects have been completely replaced as well.
It is, in essence, Super Mario World, except it was bootlegged by someone who saw someone playing it only once, and misremembered most of the mechanics, and then decided to make their own version anyway.
